Freehand Sketching by Paul Laseau

The purpose of this book is to provide a basic guide to develop freehand sketching skills. Drawing affects the way you see which affects the way you think. It also allows you to communicate visually in addition to verbally.

He tells you to draw what truly interests you, accept opportunities (adjust your expectations to avoid stress), and please yourself.

He recommends using ink. The permanency of ink encourages you to go for it instead of making timid, sketchy pencil marks and erasing bad lines. Ink's uniform line helps you see the subject. Daily drawing helps improve and maintain your skills.

Basic exercises are contour drawing, negative space, getting comfortable by making random marks, spirals, establish rectangular proportions with a minimum of marks, subdividing a square, comparing angles to clock positions, stroke consistency.

Three basic sketching tasks are constructing the sketch, modeling space & form with tone, then indicating patterns & details. There is a lot of examples and exercises that help you learn and develop your drawing skills.

He recommends keeping a journal and keeping supplies on hand so you're ready to sketch anytime & anywhere. He also discusses sketching in the studio.
